One Little Word; Create

: to generate, induce, or translate (into)

I typically spend hours on my One Little Word each year, and because of that, I almost considered not having one for 2022. I haven’t had the time to deeply ponder and explore what I wanted this new year to be, and thus, I felt that having smaller goals and ideas would be better for this year (and it still may turn into that).

Yet, over the past week, this word, cre·ate, has stood out to me like a bright light in a dark room. It has been reaffirmed by books that I am reading, podcasts that I am listening to, and even the things that I find myself saving in corner of the Internet (either here on Instagram or on Pinterest).

Over the past few years, I have purged a lot in my life. We have simplified our activities and our stuff. We have said “no” to a lot of things to create breathing room for our family. We have worked hard to pay off some debt and make choices that reflected our family’s values. We have cultivated atmospheres that we have intentionally desired for our kids.

So much to be proud of. So much to smile at.

When I think about the next year, I started thinking about how I wanted my kids to remember me. Cleaning and bustling around the house? Sure, okay. More importantly, I want them to remember me baking, and crafting, and reading, and writing. I want them to remember me doing things I love to do because my hobbies inspired me to be a better version of me.

I want to fall in love with new hobbies, be re-inspired to share more thoughts in my posts and on my blog, write more often, read more intently, snap more photos, draw, paint, explore with the things that I can create for myself, with the kids, and for others. I want the joy of art to overfill my life and childlike wonder of creating something new.
