30before30 thursday :: travel abroad

I have always had a deep passion for culture. I believe that culture is something can connect us, help us understand, aid in peace. If there is a week that goes by without an episode of Anthony Bourdain on the television or an article read around trafficking in India, I would be ashamed of myself. I love to be connected and I love learning.

More so today than ever, I believe it is extremely important to understand the differences and similarities in individuals across the world. Business is conducted in a more profitable way, friendships become stronger, and difficulties and hardships are risen out of despair because people support one another regardless of the differences.

Traveling abroad has been on my bucket list for years. I have multiple journal entries written in my teenage and college years about getting a passport, selling everything, and throwing a dart at a world map and just going...

Of course, my Americanized-self always talked me out of this, believing that I would never meet husband, land a dream career, purchase a house, and have 2.5 kids and a puppy if I did such a thing (and that was my definition of success). By time I was 25, I had friends that had traveled 25 countries in 25 years, and I could not even manage to make it to one. So, on the list, it went. I had to experience somewhere before I turned 30.

I am cannot say in 100% confidence that I would have accomplished my goal without my dream honeymoon. We won it! Four days, three nights in the Rivera Maya in Mexico helped me accomplish my goal. A passport was purchased, a plane was flown, and we made it to Mexico and back alive. My husband was slightly timid about going out of the country and returning with all of our organs, so the push of a free trip helped open a lot of doors for future trips. My Spanish lessons helped tremendously and I asked a lot of questions about the culture that was surrounding us.

Since then, I have had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Spain with my previous company. It was such a different experience than just honeymooning on the beach. Even more so, it gives me the burning desire to go more, see more, learn more about everything I can. And I plan to.

xoxo, Heather
